Chasen can count on one hand the number of times he’s stayed in one place longer than a month since he turned thirteen. But now that his family’s debt to the Esmean Empire has been wiped away, he doesn’t have to hunt down magical monsters in order to chip away at it. Unfortunately, while saving a friend and repaying a debt he owed her, he ended up agreeing to owe the most dangerous man on the continent a favor. And the Scholar isn’t known for doing good for anyone but himself.

But if the Scholar can’t find him, the wizard can’t collect. But Chasen can’t leave his family either. He’d have to tell them what he’d done, and even if he did, the Scholar could use them against him. Chasen just needs to keep his head down and hope his friends come up with a miracle before the Scholar comes to collect.
