When Isolde’s sister married Mathias and became queen, Isolde never questioned her new role as Glaciar’s protector for a moment. It didn’t make sense for her to be anything else. Her magic was a force to be reckoned with, especially since no one outside Glaciar even knew the kind of power Isolde possessed. She was Glaciar’s last and best hope should anything ever threaten her country.

When her older sister passed, Isolde didn’t even question for a moment whether or not she would step up and look after Isla’s husband and child. Of course, it also hadn’t been much of a surprise when she and Mathias grew quite close in their grief and fell in love. As queen, she could protect her people even better than before, in more ways than just as a secret magical weapon.

But when chaos erupted in the neighboring country of Astren, Isolde didn’t like what she saw, an alliance between two of their three neighbors, with the third being a vast empire that had invaded and conquered a small country that used to sit between Glaciar and the empire. Friendless and next to the Esmean Empire was not a good position to be in, and with the unfortunate passing of her husband and soon-to-be “kidnapping” of her stepdaughter, there was only one person capable of protecting Glaciar. There had only ever been one person capable of it.
